How the BAS Ensembles work

Everything a school band family needs to know before joining.

Who can join?

Students who already play a band instrument, usually in their school band. We accept flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, double bass and percussion.

How is my child placed?

By playing ability rather than age. Our music directors assess each student and place them in the Junior or Senior Ensemble.

Do they bring their instrument?

Yes, students bring the instrument they already play. Double bass and percussion are the exceptions.

When do they rehearse?

Saturdays. Junior Ensemble 1.45 to 3.45pm, Senior Ensemble 2.45 to 4.45pm. Both play together from 2.45 to 3.45pm.

Where do they perform?

On public stages as well as in the studio. The BAS Ensemble performed at the Esplanade March On festival in March 2026.

Can we try it first?

Yes. Every new student can attend a free trial lesson.

Junior Ensemble

Saturdays, 1.45 to 3.45pm

Usually for students with 1 to 2 years of experience, mostly in primary school.

Senior Ensemble

Saturdays, 2.45 to 4.45pm

Usually for students aged 14 to 17. From 2.45 to 3.45pm, both ensembles play together.

Individual Coaching

One to one lessons, matched to your child

We match your child with a tutor from the BAS network or a VENTUS musician. VENTUS is an award winning wind ensemble led by Mr Adrian Chiang, which plays at a very high level and helps mentor BAS students. It won Gold with Distinction in the Open Division at the Singapore International Band Festival 2024.

Musicianship and Aural Class

Mrs Kwek-Puah Hwee Khee

Sight singing and basic musicianship for wind players · Saturdays, 5 to 6.30pm · 12 sessions · Mrs Kwek-Puah Hwee Khee

Many wind players are strong on their instrument but less sure when reading new music. Each 90 minute session works on pulse and rhythm, sight singing, interval and listening skills, then applies them straight to band music. Singing is only a training tool here, never a performance, so there is no pressure to sing well.

Taught by Mrs Kwek-Puah Hwee Khee, a choral conductor with over 25 years of experience who played percussion in school bands herself. The class runs for 12 sessions. It is built mainly for wind band students, but anyone who wants to read and hear music better is welcome, and you do not need to be a BAS student to join.

Common questions

Does my child have to be in a school band?
Most of our ensemble students play in a school band, but what matters is their playing ability. Our music directors will assess your child and place them in the right ensemble.
What if my child misses a rehearsal?
There are no replacement lessons. We will let your child know what to work on at home, so they are ready for the next rehearsal.
How much does it cost?
We share fees directly with families. Send us a WhatsApp message and we will give you the fees for the programme that suits your child.
How many sessions are there?
The Foundation Programme, the Percussion Foundation Class and both Ensembles have 20 sessions per semester. The Musicianship and Aural Class runs for 12 sessions.

Band Academy Singapore ("BAS", "we") follows Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (PDPA). This notice explains what we collect through this website, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

What we collect

When you fill in our enquiry form, we collect your name, email address and mobile number, your child's age, and any details you choose to share, such as instrument, years of playing, goals and how you heard about us.

How your enquiry reaches us

When you press send, a copy of your details is saved in a private Google spreadsheet that belongs to BAS. Only the BAS team can view it. Your WhatsApp or email app also opens with your details filled in, so you can message us directly. The privacy policies of WhatsApp and your email provider apply to those messages.

Why we use it

  • To reply to your enquiry and recommend a suitable programme
  • To arrange a free trial lesson
  • To manage your child's enrolment, lessons, schedules and fees if you join
  • To send you news about concerts, workshops and new classes, but only if you tick the optional box

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal data. We only share it with BAS staff and teachers who need it, and, for Individual Coaching, with the tutor we match your child with from the BAS network or VENTUS, after we have told you.

How long we keep it

We keep your details only for as long as we need them for the purposes above, or as the law requires. After that, we delete them safely.

Your choices

You can ask to see or correct the personal data we hold about you, or withdraw your consent at any time, for example to stop receiving our news. Contact our Data Protection Officer below. If you withdraw consent, we will tell you if this affects what we can do for you, such as managing your child's enrolment.
