Short answers to the questions we hear most from families who are new to band music.

Can my child join with no music experience?

Yes. The Foundation Programme is made for children who have never played a band instrument.

What age can they start?

We recommend the Foundation Programme for children aged 7 and above.

Which instruments can they try?

Your child tries a few band instruments, such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium or tuba.

How do you help us choose?

After the try out, we recommend the best choices for your child, so that the instrument and your child fit each other.

Is an instrument provided?

Once we have recommended an instrument, we will let you know how to buy or rent it before lessons begin.

Can they attend a trial lesson?

Yes, and it is free. Send us an enquiry or a WhatsApp message to arrange one.

Foundation Programme Faculty

Ms Dorean Tan is the Founding Music Director and Conductor Emeritus of the New Gen Wind Symphony. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Middle Tennessee State University in the United States, and has a strong passion for music education, aiming to inspire and instil confidence in future generations. At BAS she leads the Foundation Programme, where children pick up a wind instrument for the very first time.

New to percussion?

Percussion Foundation Class

For students who are new to percussion or just starting out, taught by Ms Angeline Wee.

Pitched instruments such as xylophone, marimba and bells, and non pitched instruments such as snare drum, drum set, bass drum and cymbals

First Class Honours in Percussion from NAFA and the University of Wales, LRSM diploma holder, and a percussion teacher from primary to tertiary level.

Common questions

Does my child need to own an instrument before starting?
No. We first let your child try a few instruments and recommend the ones that suit them best. After that, we will let you know how to buy or rent the instrument before regular lessons begin.
What if my child misses a lesson?
There are no replacement lessons. We will let your child know what to work on at home, so they are ready for the next lesson.
How much does it cost?
We share fees directly with families. Send us a WhatsApp message and we will give you the fees for the programme that suits your child.
Can my child also join the Musicianship and Aural Class?
Yes. It runs on Saturdays from 5 to 6.30pm and is open to anyone who wants to improve their musicianship. Read more.

Band Academy Singapore ("BAS", "we") follows Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (PDPA). This notice explains what we collect through this website, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

What we collect

When you fill in our enquiry form, we collect your name, email address and mobile number, your child's age, and any details you choose to share, such as instrument, years of playing, goals and how you heard about us.

How your enquiry reaches us

When you press send, a copy of your details is saved in a private Google spreadsheet that belongs to BAS. Only the BAS team can view it. Your WhatsApp or email app also opens with your details filled in, so you can message us directly. The privacy policies of WhatsApp and your email provider apply to those messages.

Why we use it

  • To reply to your enquiry and recommend a suitable programme
  • To arrange a free trial lesson
  • To manage your child's enrolment, lessons, schedules and fees if you join
  • To send you news about concerts, workshops and new classes, but only if you tick the optional box

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal data. We only share it with BAS staff and teachers who need it, and, for Individual Coaching, with the tutor we match your child with from the BAS network or VENTUS, after we have told you.

How long we keep it

We keep your details only for as long as we need them for the purposes above, or as the law requires. After that, we delete them safely.

Your choices

You can ask to see or correct the personal data we hold about you, or withdraw your consent at any time, for example to stop receiving our news. Contact our Data Protection Officer below. If you withdraw consent, we will tell you if this affects what we can do for you, such as managing your child's enrolment.
