BAS Ensembles
Junior Ensemble · Senior Ensemble

Three musicians who have shaped Singapore's wind band scene, now mentoring the next generation.
Mr Adrian Chiang
Music Director and co-founder
Conductor and educator who has worked with young musicians for over two decades, from primary schools to university level. He led the Philharmonic Youth Winds for ten years.

Music Director and co-founder
Former Section Leader and Principal Euphonium of the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band, known for creative, expressive teaching that has brought strong results for his bands.

Music Director and co-founder
Started music at age 7 and spent seven and a half years as a French horn player with the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band. His school bands have been recognised at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentations.

Percussion Faculty
First Class Honours in Percussion from NAFA and the University of Wales, and winner of the Embassy of Peru Award for Best BA (Hons) Graduate. She holds the LRSM diploma, has performed with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Singapore Lyric Opera, and teaches percussion from primary to tertiary level.

Ms Dorean Tan
Foundation Programme Faculty
Ms Dorean Tan is the Founding Music Director and Conductor Emeritus of the New Gen Wind Symphony. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Middle Tennessee State University in the United States, and has a strong passion for music education, aiming to inspire and instil confidence in future generations. At BAS she leads the Foundation Programme, where children pick up a wind instrument for the very first time.
Mrs Kwek-Puah Hwee Khee
Musicianship and Aural Faculty
A choral conductor, music educator and vocal trainer with over 25 years of experience in Singapore. She is Founder and Artistic Director of Khee’s Studio, and Musical Director of Cantare Children’s Choir and the adult ensemble Forza. She played percussion in the school bands of Pearl’s Hill Primary, Dunman High and Nanyang Junior College, so she teaches musicianship with the wind band in mind.

What age can my child start?
The BAS Foundation Programme is for children without any wind band or band instrument experience. We recommend it for children aged 7 and above.
Which instruments do you accept?
All band instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, double bass and percussion. Most of our students already play in a school band, and our ensembles help them grow more confident on the instrument they play.
Does my child need any music experience?
No. The BAS Foundation Programme is for children without any wind band or band instrument experience. Students who already play join the Junior or Senior Ensemble. Our music directors place each student based on playing ability rather than age. The Junior Ensemble is usually for students with 1 to 2 years of experience, mostly in primary school, and the Senior Ensemble is usually for ages 14 to 17.
When are classes held?
All classes are on Saturdays at our Waterloo Centre studio. The Foundation Programme runs from 10 to 11.30am, the Percussion Foundation Class from 11.45am to 1.15pm, the Junior Ensemble from 1.45 to 3.45pm and the Senior Ensemble from 2.45 to 4.45pm. The Musicianship and Aural Class runs from 5 to 6.30pm. The Foundation Programme, the Percussion Foundation Class and both Ensembles have 20 sessions per semester. The Musicianship and Aural Class runs for 12 sessions.
How much does it cost?

Can my child attend a trial lesson?
Yes, and it is free. Send us an enquiry or a WhatsApp message and we will arrange a trial lesson for your child.
Does my child need their own instrument?
Ensemble students bring the instrument they already play. Double bass and percussion are the exceptions, so there is no need to bring those. For the Foundation Programme, we first let your child try a few instruments and recommend the ones that suit them best. After that, we will let you know how to buy or rent the instrument before regular lessons begin.
What happens if my child misses a lesson?
There are no replacement lessons. We will let your child know what to work on at home, so they are ready for the next lesson.
Can BAS guarantee a DSA place?
No one can promise a school place. What we do is help students prepare confidently and present their strongest work at auditions.
